i’m not sure i can stay on completely through 8pm eastern — will there be recordings available?
Tom Martin 11:18 AM
Yes, since you registered, you will be first in line to get access to the videos.
nick burka 11:33 AM
Can you elaborate on how un-assisted human lawyers make up citations? Did I hear that right?
Ed Walters 12:06 PM
Yes – it’s a very curious part of the study. The authors didn’t elaborate, but I’d love to learn more.
nick burka 11:54 AM
Won’t this dynamic of easier work, faster, more services/products (provided by underlying legal service AI providers like vLex), lead to a commoditization of services over the longer term – and therefore a dramatic reduction in price? Where the consumer benefits, but the law firms face real losses
Ed Walters 12:07 PM
I hope that I got to this at the end – yes, only if we don’t expand the size of the market. So much growth potential!
Jonathan Franklin 11:55 AM
Given AGI appears imminent (within the next five years), are we rearranging deck chairs? How many lawyers will be needed in ten years and what will their status be relative to today? Why do we assume law firms will continue to exist as they are now with the same revenue generation potential?
Ed Walters 12:07 PM
People keep saying that AGI is imminent, but I have to say that I’m a skeptic.
Aleksandr Tiulkanov 12:57 PM
There is no scientific consensus that suggest AGI is imminent. I personally think we are likely to see systems becoming more capable, but not to the extent to become generally intelligent.
Jonathan Franklin 11:58 AM
Is the medical model appropriate in that medical people may need to physically see you, unlike law?
Ed Walters 12:09 PM
I think it’s very similar. In the 1900s, medicine was an art practiced based on anecdotal experiences of doctors. It became a science only after the 1917 pandemic. We’re only now realizing that some medical diagnoses and treatments don’t require medical doctors! (Dentists, too.)
Kevin Kongslie 12:10 PM
Ed, I completely agree with the need to expand the market access to lawyers or lawyer-like services to a much broader population, most of whom are underserved due to cost constraints. How actively is big law pursuing this market reach? It seems they have a huge potential to provide a ton of automatic service to people who they would never otherwise get a chance to serve. Are law firms generally for or against this opportunity?
Ed Walters 12:21 PM
In my experience, not much at all. It’s too bad – I think they could do a lot of good work!
Jessica N 12:11 PM
Hi Ed, if technology is NOT neutral, then how come we cure bias, judgmental, and prejudice using AI?
Tom Martin 12:23 PM
Ed has left the building, but I’ll answer by saying that we cure it by being mindful that it can happen, then revisiting the training data to adjust as needed.
Raffiel Newsome 12:50 PM
What education would you suggest in order to position yourself as a expert on AI in the courtroom? To be able to spot deepfakes and be able to unbiasedly speak to it?
Joey Gartner 12:56 PM
The ABA task force on Law and AI has some great webinars, resources and content on the AI and the courts. It can be found here:

Hi all! I work at a legaltech startup and I am wondering if any of you have had experience with GenAI vendors struggling to meet data security requirements for law firms? I’m not sure how these LLM-wrapped solutions could ever be used on client or confidential data given the data security and data leakage risks. Thanks
Tom Martin 01:38 PM
Thank you for your question. The speakers touched on this during their discussion.
Raffiel Newsome 01:18 PM

On the spectrum of journalism experience, would you expect that AI utilization in legal tech journalism could lower the barrier to entry for newer journalists or pressure experienced journalists to “adopt or leave”? How would you think it will impact the supply of skilled journalists?
Tom Martin 01:42 PM
Thank you for your question. The speakers touched on this during their discussion.
Aleksandr Tiulkanov 01:49 PM
Bob, but Perplexity is not a universal replacement for Google, just because of its tendency to hallucinate (links are often not supporting the citations!) + it can be gamed by prompt injection content on the page to falsely summarise what is not on the page. Any comment on this?
Tom Martin 01:55 PM
Sorry we didn’t get to this one Aleksandr.

Jonathan Franklin 02:13 PM
Lawyers seem to see these direct to consumer solutions as a threat and still need to pay off their law school debts – how do we convince lawyers to take these clients?
This question has been answered live
Nick Rishwain 02:14 PM
Many of us know regulators interfere with tech that would help consumers. Do you have data about consumers deciding to use AI regardless of UPL rules?
This question has been answered live
Evan Santos 02:16 PM
With the rise of direct-to-consumer AI-driven legal tools that offer document automation alongside access to licensed attorneys, how do you see the regulatory landscape evolving? What challenges and opportunities do you foresee in balancing consumer accessibility with ethical and professional responsibility standards?
Shellie Reid 02:55 PM
The legal profession has fought tooth and nail to keep the barriers up. I think that the legal profession itself is the largest barrier.
Sateesh Nori 02:20 PM
do people want lawyers, or do they want solutions?
This question has been answered live
Nathaniel MacArthur 02:21 PM
Would you mind clarifying how you anticipate collaboration within case workflows (e.g., discovery) between law firms changing due to growing AI utilization? Could AI reduce waste (e.g., eliminate multiple follow ups), improve settlement outcomes, etc.?
Shellie Reid 02:57 PM
AI could absolutely reduce the time spent on routine tasks, but as our panelists pointed out, we will need to balance that with the human aspect. However, I think that we need to hear from the consumer. I personally think that younger audiences will welcome not dealing with another person, but many people disagree with that view.
Paul Prettitore 02:26 PM
For those what do not want (or necessaily need) lawyers do you see a role for AI in helping with ‘basic’ legal problems like explaining the concept of child custody and helping generate draft custody agreements?
This question has been answered live
Nick Rishwain 02:27 PM
To elaborate, I’m assuming consumers are using AI tools because they’ve found themselves unable to get the appropriate assistance.
Shellie Reid 02:31 PM
I think they are using before they know that their problem is a legal one.
KATRENIA COLLINS 02:28 PM
Will and should non-lawyers (entities, including AI company, or persons) have the same liability that lawyers have when giving legal advise?
This question has been answered live
Charles Laplante 02:29 PM
What do you think of having bar/regulators implement & support “sandbox” regulatory spaces for access to justice legaltech, to allow testing high-impact-potential solutions while limiting UPL exposure?
This question has been answered live
Nkoyo Effiong Lewis 02:34 PM
AI is often positioned as a great equalizer when it comes to access to legal services challenges. Earlier today, Ed Walters mentioned that AI is the worst and cheapest it will be right now. Do you have concerns about the potential rising cost of AI (financial or otherwise) and how this may impact a long-term + sustainable solution to the access to legal services problem?
Shellie Reid 03:00 PM
Absolutely, legal aid organizations already struggle to provide basic technology because of cost; also many organizations still see hiring more staff as being a higher priority than technology.
Siphosethu Nyezi 02:40 PM
How can we prepare for the potential impact of AI on the workforce?
Tom Martin 02:44 PM
Thanks for your question, but it may be beyond the scope for this panel.
Charles Laplante 02:42 PM
As lawyers, we are held to safeguarding our judgment & opinions by objective analysis & professional distance from a client’s case. GenAI models & tools are not, and sycophancy towards the user is a known “behavioral” shortfall. Does that imply a limit to how much faith we should put towards pure self-help GenAI-powered assistants in legal aid, especially given users have real-world problems & agendas?
Shellie Reid 03:06 PM
I think that we still have much to learn and AI powered tools will require a lot more testing and training before letting vulnerable populations become test subjects of systems not fully vetted.
KATRENIA COLLINS 02:43 PM
So why not define “legal advise?”
Shellie Reid 02:47 PM
There are certainly attempts to do so
Richard DiBona 02:46 PM
I just thought about another piece to this… what about landlords, businesses, etc acting as their own lawyer and drafting threatening eviction notices or other legal docs with AI?
Shellie Reid 02:49 PM
It is absolutely happening
Katy Lovell 02:48 PM
How do we keep the justice gap from widening from those with and without access to technology. We have many communities in Montana, especially tribal communties that have no access to high speed internet, cell service, or public computers.
Shellie Reid 03:00 PM
We don’t without a huge change in how we think about the problem and solutions.
Nick Rishwain 02:49 PM
What’s the one priority each of you have that would immediately improve acces to legal services?
Shellie Reid 03:10 PM
I can only answer for myself but I would love to see the legal profession embrace a new model.

Do you rely on AI for initial legal research and analysis? Is your standard ‘better than a human’ or ‘perfection’?
Catherine Reach 03:51 PM
Depends on the stakes. Even in traditional research tools sometimes the answer was there is no answer. I still think that the human is the buck that stops there.
